The INES Name Resolver


Starting in Version 3.0 INES incorporates a Name Resolver, which allows to query the database by any of the names of the desired object.


In addition to this, names are also searched in the list of object names provided by the Guest Observers at the time of the observation and located in the image header, the observing scripts or the hand-written log.

The Homogeneous Object Identifier

Each object has been assigned a "Homogeneous Object Identifier" (HOI), only for output purposes. IUE specific observations have the prefix IUE. Solar System objects have the prefix ZZ. Objects in the Magellanic Clouds have the prefix MC. For Novae and Supernovae the HOI is always "Nova" and "Supernova", respectively, even if they are not located in the Galaxy. Objects which do not have an individual entry in the CDS are labeled with the prefix AOO (Any Other Object), e.g. AOO FSSW 5

The Homogeneous Coordinates

Each HOI has its corresponding "Homogeneous Coordinates" (both for B1950 and J2000). These coordinates have been obtained from SIMBAD, and when not available in this database they have been set to those provided by the Guest Observer at the time of the observation. Comet coordinates for data acquired through 1989 have been provided by M. Festou (ULDA Guide n.2: Comets, ESA-SP 1134, May 1990). The coordinates of IUE specific observations have been set to zero (except for "Sky" observations).

IAU: from IAU recommendations for Solar System Objects.
IUE Target: from the Guest Observer inputs.
IUE Spec: for IUE specific observations.

The HOI of the object following the definition given above.

The type of the object, as given by SIMBAD (except for IUE specific observations and Solar System Objects). For AOO objects it has been set to "Unknown".
